Recommended Animes/Mangas/Manhwa/Webtoons (Always updating!!!)

NOTE: I'm always going to update this page as I love finding out more awesome series and sharing them for others to check out. So make sure to come back for updates!

I love reading and watching animes/mangas/manhwa/webtoons. There are differences between them and the American comics/cartoons. Mangas are Japanese 'comics' and they're usually inked in black and white. Anime are Japan's 'cartoon' on screen and lot of animes derived from mangas/novels while some other animes have their own story. Manhwa is like Korea's comic, but they don't really have their own manhwa inspired cartoon shows, rather they're developed into live or inspired kdramas. Also, webtoon are like Korea's online manga that comes out weekly or depending on the authors. They are usually colored or are in black and white strips with a couple of long pages. Therefore, don't get confused!!!

So after reading and watching many of them, here is a list in random orders of my favorites so far! The reason why this list is a whole bunch of mix collections is because I don't have lots of favorites in each category.

1. Bride of the Water God (Fantasy/Manhwa/Romance/Beautful details/Gorgeous characters)
I love love love this manhwa! Omg, the art is beautiful in every single page! The storyline is great and inspired by a legend about the Water God. The main story is about this girl, Soah, who was chosen to be sacrificed to the Water God by her village to stop the drought in the human world. Later she meets the Water God and learned that she isn't dead, matter of fact she is living in another world. Instead of death, she became the Water God's bride and gets caught up in the battle between gods for power. The only hard part to understand is the huge amount of characters and relationships the characters share because there are a lot of people that you need to remember! I often find myself not knowing of who they are talking about and being lost. But I like how the main girl doesn't cry over little things all the time and her love with the main guy is mature. I never know what to expect because there a lot of possibilities and twists. So I'll be waiting for scans and spoilers! I'm crossing my fingers that the artist won't leave me disappointed.

2. Fairy Tail Manga/Anime (Fantasy/Magic/Humor/Friendship/Epic Magic Fight Scenes)
I watched the anime first and I fell in love with it! It's about the adventures that occurs in a magic guild called Fairy Tail. The majority of the story revolves around the main cast, Lucy (blonde), Nastu (pinkish-red hair), Happy (the blue cat), Gray (blackish-blue hair), and Erza (red). Although it can be repetitive some episodes, I was still impressed by the animation and interested in the storyline to keep watching the rest of 156 episodes plus the new episodes coming out each Friday! I've read parts of the manga to keep me updated and what to be expected. I think it's a great series about friendship (there are a lot of characters!), what family means, fighting for your loved ones and what's right, and about understanding that you are empowered by the people you love and care about. There's a little cheesy romantic scenes here and there. And omg, so many fan service scenes for the guys! I mean a lot of the female characters have huge breasts and you'll be seeing a lot of them. The amount of boob scenes overkilled my eyes, like their are a ton of scenes of just huge boobies, shower scenes, and exposure of bare skin! But anyways, I totally recommend people to give it a try because in my opinion, I don't think it's overrated.

3. Keishichou Tokuhanka 007 (Romance/Mystery/Humor/Hot Guys/Supernatural)
I'm not usually into mystery manga but this one is too good to not read! It's basically about how this girl with a supernatural power who works with the police department called 007, but mainly with an older (hot) guy who has a dark scar that he can't forget. Together as partners, they solve mystery/murder/supernatural cases. Cases are random and it's not repetitive because so many kinds of things happen. And there are many scenes that makes you want to squeal either in happiness or I can't believe this is happening! The art style is like bishounen style so if you don't like the long legged/beautiful characters than maybe you won't enjoy it as much. It's more rare to see female characters in mangas to be the stronger one, mentally, at least or save the guy, vice versa. So I believe it won't be disapppointing to read this manga because it's different from a typical shoujo manga.

4. Oh, My Romantic Kumiho (Fantasy/Manhwa/Hot Guys/Romance/Humanity)

A beauitful drawn manhwa that reference to kpop!!! OMG, it's a must read! I know I'm fangirling a bit here...It's about the love between a human girl and a human boy who is actually a 700 year old gumiho. You thought it was a typical young romance story? Wrong, kind of, maybe it is a bit cheesy, but so? It deals with accepting your loved one for who they really are literally. She has to decide to be with him or leave him because life ain't so easy after knowing the person you love isn't who they turned out to be. The gumiho society isn't all that pretty despite their perfect appearances and when every gumiho is out trying to eat your liver, I would be freaking out too. Don't worry though! Her almost perfect boyfriend is at her protection at all cost. But the real question here is, would she stay?! (I totally would. XD)

5. Samurai Deeper Kyo Manga/Anime(Action/Friendship/Adventure/Fan Service/Historical/Samurai/Epic Fighting)

Boy, did I get attached to this manga big time! I'm not a big fan of long, dragging series, but this one is an exception. It's about this medicine peddler who have another fiery soul in his body and he meets a young female bounty hunter who is looking for the murderer of her brother. Together, they travel parts of Japan and meet a lot of great and bad people! Things aren't as simple as it seems on the surface because a lot of the characters got secrets and baggage that their carrying/hiding. Each character has a different purpose and goals so you shouldn't be skimming this manga. What I love the most is that you'll get to understand both the allies and the enemies. There is a lot of great action scenes mixed with comedy and little hints of romance. And be aware of fan service because I saw a lot of things that I didn't need to, but I'm guessing it's part of the humor. The anime wasn't as well done and I watched and finished it with a feeling of being unsatisfied. So read the manga! It's a great series that won't leave you bored. But the anime can be skipped.

6. Zettai Heiwa Daisakusen (Fictional/Historical/Romance/Wars/People Rage/Action/Royals)
This manga is so-so cute and I love the couple! It's about a treaty marriage between a prince and a princess of two different country that occurs in order to settle the long waged war/battles between them. With their own differences and perspective, this troubled couple have to act like they love each other in public. Even though it should just be all an act, political threats and outside enemies bring them together through their struggles. This manga goes beyond the typical marriage set up in my perspective because it discusses real politic issues (metaphorically) such as different political goals and the corrupted society. Really good storyline, fun and cute drawing styles, and it will leave you wanting to read more and more! Totally recommended for readers who are a fan of shoujo mangas.

7. Biyaku Cafe (Romance/Rated M/Humor/Gorgeous people/Cafe/Butlers/Multi-Stories)
You like seeing hot a$$ guys/girls with their gorgeous bishounen faces and bodies? Or maybe romantic stories in a cafe setting? Well, then you are in for a special one because this manga is hot hot hot! There are different romance stories dedicated to different characters, but it starts out and is mainly about the two main characters on the cover art to the left. Yeh, I'm not going to lie it's a bit rated mature for some smexy scenes so don't be surprised (it isn't anything crazy though). And no, it's not yaoi; the main girl just look very a like a hot guy and her lover is totally fine and crazy over her. I don't want to say much or spoil anything because you got to read it, girlfriend! Just know that love is in the air and people have different ways of expressing it. I guarantee that you may not like all, but most some of the stories that happens in this mysterious cafe.

8. Absolute Witch (Manhwa/Adventure/Magic/Humor/Period/Romance/Fantasy/European influences)
I can't get enough of fantasy and magical genres! They're epic, literally, and offer us new worlds! I absolutely love this story for it's art, storyline, and you don't find many manhwas like this one! It focuses on a young girl who doesn't know (yet) that she's a witch by birth. Along on her traveling, she meets a beautiful and mysterious alchemist who also hold magical powers. Together, they embark on a journey to help her control her new powerful magic. It isn't easy trying to keep her secret identity and maybe there are others as well? But the funny thing is that all the witches left the human world a long time ago. Why exactly?! (You're going to have to read for that answer! Muahahaha!) With the return of a witch, beings in hiding that are unknown to humans are coming back out to the world such as fairies! But there are other people who are not so happy hearing the return of the witches. Luckily, she has herself and a man to protect her from unknown danger. No one should skip this manhwa because witches are awesomely-fantastic!

9. Cherry Boy, That Girl (Romance/High School/Comedy/Friendship/Love triangles)
This is a Korean webtoon and it has elements of comedy, romance, high school, and love triangles. It is basically about the main girl who has lost a lot of weight and how her love story progress after transferring to a school that just turned from all boys to coed. Her boyfriend is pretty hot, but what lies behind his pretty fast has a dark history. Along with that, she meets new people who help her realize many good and bad things about her relationship with her boyfriend. You actually get to see how the characters change and development through their daily interactions. (SPOILER) Well, I am not a big fan when the heroine is stuck between to potential lovers, but this is an exception for me. I feel like she is strong enough to make her own choices and realize what she wants. And I am cheering for the second lead guy because OH MAN, he is a lot better in my opinion.

10. Yukarism (Romance/Historical/High School/Fantasy)
This manga deserves more recognition, I mean it is a great story. It's about a guy who was born in modern day Japan with his previous life's memories intact. He becomes a famous novelist through his recollections of historical Japan and discovers that he is able to travel back in time. But the catch is that his previous life was being a famous and popular geisha. As he tries to recollect his previous life memories, he discover that his previous life may have an influence in his present life. A MUST read for anyone who likes romance/historical/fantasy genres. It is a funny and very beautiful manga to read.

11. Horimiya (High School/Romance/Slice of Life/Comedy)
This is a very popular manga and I think it is worth the hype!!! It's about the relationship that is gradually built upon a socially awkward guy and a hard working girl. They learn about each other that there is definitely a lot more about each other than what they appear to look like. The author does a great job at putting comedy in their daily lives. Also, I like how it shows the challenges that teenagers go through while trying to maintain a balance life between school, relationships, and love. It is a funny and WORTH-A-WHILE manga to read.

12. Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun a.k.a My Little Monster (Friendship/Romance/Slice of Life/Comedy/High School)
OHHHhh this one is so cute and is one of my cult favorites!!! The heroine is a study bug and focuses her time on excelling at academics. One day, her teacher asks her to go meet up with a guy whose been known to been skipping school and has a fairly bad reputation. Of course, things don't start out pretty, but she learns that he is just a socially awkward, introverted person. They develop a relationship and with that, make more friends as they start to change too. The anime and manga is both great and the slice of life is not drastically boring or dragged on; I say watch and read BOTH!!! There isn't much that I can complain about this series, but like it ahaha.

13. Noragami (High school/Fantasy/Japanese Gods/Action/Comedy/Romance)
Love love love this manga & the anime is done very well (I recommend both)! It's centered on three main characters, Hiyori, the half alive-half spirit human girl, Yukine, a wandering spirit, and Yato, the god of calamity. It follows their adventure to fight off evil and to help Yato, who seems to be having troubles with his dark past. Things become more complicated when they become involved with other gods. The world of the Gods is filled with secrets and there are unknown enemies lurking close by! It is a mixed of high school life, LOL comedy (the TROLL moments & expressions are the best), hints of romance, and great character developments! Check it out! Btw, the cover art for the first season lacks interest so don't judge it by its cover art. It is a decent and easy to watch anime.

Tokyo Ghoul anime

Tokyo Ghoul:re (2nd season manga)

14. Tokyo Ghoul & Tokyo Ghoul:re (Lots of BLOOD/Action/Psychological/High school/Friendships/Bromance)
What is ghoul? They are not zombies but are human flesh eaters and have incredible powers. It makes them on top of the food chain but it doesn't necessarily mean they dominate the world or live a happy life. The main character, Kaneki, gets thrown into this world unexpectedly and has to deal with dangerous enemies of both ghouls and humans. It is not an easy task when he is trying to protect the ones he cherishes. I recommend watching the anime first because the manga can get kind of hard to get into since it drags on longer (although the art is fantastic). The anime gets to the point and it won't bore you with the great action scenes and fast pacing. This is definitely a more mature and serious anime to watch so be prepared! It is not a slice of life/easy going type of anime. SPOILER: Kaneki can go in the "DID NOTHING WRONG SQUAD" because he doesn't need to do anything to get f**k up, literally...Also, bromance in this series is some next level sh*t.

  1. Ah, I'm so happy to see Yukarism here! It never gets mentioned, but I love the idea (and the drawings...) so much!

Bride of the Water God is kind of hard to get into, but the art is so gorgeous it draws you in anyway! >////< Now I want to check out your other recommendations, especially because you've mentioned so many manga with historical settings and there can never be enough of those! :D
