My Favorite (& Recommended) Wuxia/Chinese Dramas! (Always Updating!!!)

I've always been a fan of Chinese dramas, especially more if they're historical. Why? The stories are better in general, there are so many beautiful costumes, and they usually have awesome bad ass characters! Yeah, they tend to have more eps, but many of them are worth the time to WATCH. Here are some of my favs in no particular order.

Sound of the Desert

We can just take a moment to appreciate how beautiful the costumes are? I mean they have done a fantastic job at the character costumes. Who doesn't like these?! The production went far and beyond on how wonderful these costumes look.

Anyways, back to reality. This drama is based on a romance novel by Tong Hua and if you know about Wuxia dramas in depth, this author here is well known as many inspired movies and dramas are from his books. Obviously, the main cast are big stars like Hu Ge, Cecilia Lui, and Eddie Peng (all of them are experienced at wuxia dramas). The story is about Xin Yue (Cecilia Lui) who grew up in the desert with her wolf brothers and later, enters the big city Chang'an. During her stay, she gets to know two different man that eventually both are fighting for her affections. I mean the struggle is real here, Eddie Peng or Hu Ge? The depends on who you like more, but personally I'm glad she chose the one I like haha. It is a great story with aspects of political/war conflicts, romance, love triangle, and the struggles she goes through to protect the one she loves.

Legend of Condor Heroes (2008)

Ariel Lin and Hu Ge does a great...more like AMAZING jobs at portraying their roles.

Another inspired wuxia drama adapted from the novel with the same name by Louis Cha. It starred big actors and actresses like Hu Ge, Ariel Lin, Justin Yuan, and Cecilia Liu. In this series, Hu Ge plays Guo Jing, a man who isn't so smart, but have strong and loyal heart. Ariel Lin's character Huang Rong is intelligent and humorous that you'll love her character immediately. Their lives intertwine when Guo Jing meets Huang Rong and she teaches him about the different realities/hardships of life. The two leads share great chemistry together on screen and it's a drama you won't be disappointed watching. With a mix of martial arts, political conflicts, and funny love squares/triangles, this is a classic must watch for Wuxia drama fans.

Chinese Paladin

Liu Yifei is just so gorgeous in this drama!

An RPG inspired drama with the same name that is set in a fantasy and romance story. Big stars like Hu Ge, Liu Yifei, Andy An, Eddie Ping, and more participated in this drama. Hu Ge's character, Li Xiaoyao, goes on trip when he tries to find medicine for his aunt, but instead found the land of fairies that Lui Yifei's character, Zhao Ling'er, resides at. There, Li Xiaoyao, finds out that his trip will lead him to a quest to save the world. This drama focuses on the romance and fantasy part so if you like those two genres then it'll be an easy watch for you. Also, the cinematics and OSTs are beauitful! I feel in love with Hu Ge and Liu Yifei through this drama!

Chinese Paladin 3

The characters are well written and plus, the costumes are beautiful.

Okay, so the producers decided to skip season 2 because the story wasn't good enough? I will never know hahaha. It is based on the same RPG game so expect elements of fantasy, martial arts, and romance. Regardless, this drama won't disappoint you because it is different from Chinese Paladin. It is supposedly to be set a few decades before the Chinese Paladin and has another whole story of its own. It stars Hu Ge (I mean, you can never have too much Hu Ge in dramas/movies) alongside with other big stars like Wallace Huo, Yang Mi, Tiffany Tang, and Cecilia Liu. Hu Ge plays a bunch of different important roles while Yang Mi plays Tang Xuejian, the spoiled granddaughter of the Tang Manor. It is a humorous story that has a mixture of adventure with lots of characters with their own stories. My favorite couple besides the main lead is obviously Wallace Huo and Tiffany Tang because their love really had no limits. I won't spoil anything because if you had watched Chinese Paladin or want to see something similar to it then you''ll like this drama too!

Princess Weiyoung

Talk about wedding of the year!

Vanness Wu and his crazy braided hair...wondered how long that took.

Costumes, accessories, head pieces, you name it, are gorgeous in this drama!

Starring big names Tang (Tiffany) Yan, Luo Jin, Vanness Wu, and more (I honestly haven't seen much of the other actors/actresses)! This drama is a obviously going to be a historical/romance/palace/political drama. Basically to sum it up with its long 54 eps, there's identity impersonation, pentagon romance(?) between the main casts, and cat fights between the actresses for the love of their man. I honestly, kind of, skimmed through this drama because some parts was dragged out longer than I thought. Overall, a great drama with beautiful visuals and interesting story.

Other MUST WATCH recommendations:

  • General and I starring Angelababy & Wallace Chung (2017)
  • Three Lives Three Worlds Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms starring Yang Mi & March Chao (2017)
  • Prince of Lan Ling starring Ariel Lin & Feng Shaofeng (2013)
  • Legend of Fuyao starring Yang Mi & Ethan Ruan (2018)
